Managing a facility build-out or retrofit takes more than good intentions. It takes oversight. Follow-through. And someone whose full-time job is to make sure things actually get done right.
That’s where I come in.
Open Source Horticulture specializes in project management, systems integration, and preventative maintenance for cannabis and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) operations — stepping in as your technical lead, systems integrator, and behind-the-scenes partner to make sure your facility works the way it’s supposed to.
Even the best operators don’t have the bandwidth to manage every moving piece. Construction delays. Vendor miscommunication. Equipment that arrives with missing components or fails after install. It’s not a matter of if things go sideways — it’s how quickly you can catch and correct them.
And in CEA, every delay eats into your margins.
Misaligned timelines don’t just slow things down — they push back your first revenue cycle, extend your burn rate, and force you to carry the cost of mistakes that should’ve been caught upstream.
Choosing the wrong equipment? That’s one of the most expensive missteps you can make. That’s why I’m hands-on from the start—helping you evaluate and select the right equipment for your facility, your goals, and your budget.
But it’s not just about picking individual components. I consider the whole puzzle: operational layout, workflow, equipment sizing, crop planning, and unique specifications. Every element needs to work together to support your process (not slow it down).
I look beyond sales specs and dig into what’s going to work best for your workflow, your team, and your long-term success.
And most importantly — I don’t accept kickbacks from vendors. Every recommendation I make is based on what will serve your goals, not mine.
When I’m on your team, I become the central knowledge base of your facility. I understand your infrastructure inside and out — and I know what’s supposed to happen, when, and why.
I’m the one who follows up when timelines slip.
Who flags issues when systems don’t sync.
Who will keep hammering the issues until they get resolved, whatever it takes.
I’m not here to take over your cultivation team or tell you how to grow.
If you need help developing a plan, I can do that. After working with more than 1.7 million square feet of facilities and over a decade of project management and operational success, I’ve developed the cultivation plans and SOPs to help you achieve the most important for your business- efficiency, yield, quality, speed, or whatever it will take to make you successful.
But my main priority is integration — plugging into your team to support your existing vision with the bandwidth, experience, and follow-through that your project deserves.
This is a collaborative process. My job is to keep things moving and aligned, NOT to dictate how you should run your grow.
Building a strong foundation of clear and organized information in the beginning is critical to downstream cohesion and project success
Every facility needs a squeaky wheel. Someone whose job is to remember, follow up, and get it fixed before it becomes a bigger issue.
A project isn’t truly complete until your team can step in, take the reins, and run the facility with confidence.
Small problems ignored too long become big ones. Catastrophic issues or crop losses are rarely the result of a single event- they’re symptoms of missed details or overlooked issues compounded over time. When your team is focusing on the day-to-day, it is easy to overlook or miss seemingly small issues. Our services ensure nothing slips through the cracks, and these issues get resolved before they turn into disasters.
I bring over a decade of cannabis and CEA experience to my consulting and project management practice. Through Open Source Horticulture, I help operators achieve best-in-class results with clear strategy, technical rigor, and honest guidance.
I’ve worked with licensed cannabis operators in 17 states and across 1.7 million square feet of cultivation facilities — from mid-size independents to multi-state operators. My previous roles include COO of Bickel Consulting and VP of Operations for Buckeye Relief, where I oversaw facility design, operational systems, automation, irrigation, and advanced controls.
My background is in Agricultural Engineering from The Ohio State University, and I began my career in CEA over a decade ago, focusing on greenhouse food production systems, business management, CEA education, and system design.
I am a firm believer that agriculture is rooted in a passion for the work and love for the plant, and I will always be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done and ensure it is done right.
Waiting too long can cost you more than money — it can leave you playing catch-up for good. Let’s build a facility that works, and keeps working. Shoot me an email to the address below so we can start talking about your project!
